I Need Your Help

I need to teach a teacher in-service in a couple of weeks and my topic is "Classroom Maintenance."   Basically it would involve tips on how to get your [primary] class running as smoothly as possible.   Would it be helpful if the chairs were set up beforehand (by the previous class)?  Or perhaps having an attendance chart like in preschool?

Any ideas?

What has helped your classes run the smoothest and what are things that you think would help other teachers??

THANK YOU!  I appreciate any ideas!!

Bribery is always a good thing. How about a jar that can be filled with M&M's, marbles, beans, etc for reverent behavior, participation etc. The reward can be decided upon by the teacher and the class. Makes it fun.

Marrianne, I have never taught a Primary class, ever, so I have no ideas for you that I know work. However, when you compile your list could you please send me a copy so that one day, if I do ever teach a Primary class I can have some great ideas? Thanks! That would be so great, and you can throw oranges at me now because I know your laughing.

We have buckets for all of the classes filled with supplies...crayons, chalk/eraser, pencils, tape & stickers. We put them in the classrooms for the teachers. Having a schedule written down is nice (in the binder with the manual & GAK pics so that the teacher or sub knows when to dismiss (teachers teaching the 2nd hour need this-3rd hour not so much). Those are my 2 cents. Good luck! You'll do a bang up job, I'm sure.

Chair covers that I made with a pocket in the front [I have a set at home] and then place a card sticking out of pocket with their picture on it, that way they will know right where to sit.

Another idea for older kids was a large class jar entitled "I Walk Where Jesus Walks" with a picture of Jesus on the front. Another jar or bag with sand in it and a small scooper. The teacher would put a scoop of sand in the jar if they: were there, said the prayer, were reverent, had their scriptures, etc. When the large jar was filled we would have a class activity or party [not on Sunday].

Tell the story with pictures or storyboard...then have a class member come up front and retell the story using the pictures.

You can't just preach or read to them. There has to be class involvement depending on the age: story, activity, story, music, etc. I know with seminary kids you had to change about every 10-15 minutes.

Good to sometimes have an 'object lesson' before you start the regular lesson that may lead into what you want them to learn that day.

There are several books on teaching on the bookshelf at our home if you want to borrow, help yourself.
